Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections according to established procedures.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of specimens.
  • Prepare patients for blood collection and explain procedures clearly.
  • Handle, store, and transport blood specimens according to laboratory standards.
  • Maintain accurate patient and specimen records.
  • Follow infection-control, safety, and hygiene procedures.
  • Properly dispose of needles and other biohazardous materials.
  • Monitor patients for potential reactions such as dizziness or fainting.
  • Maintain phlebotomy equipment and ensure supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Communicate with laboratory staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable healthcare regulations and policies.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized institution preferred/required depending on state or employer requirements.
  • Previous experience performing venipuncture is preferred.
  • Knowledge of blood collection techniques and specimen handling procedures.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and infection-control practices.

Preferred Experience

  • 1–3 years of experience as a Phlebotomist.
  • Experience working in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, clinics, blood donation centers, or outpatient facilities.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory information systems is a plus.
